Tilburg has 65,000 students and a nightlife scene that almost nobody from outside the city knows about, which is exactly what makes it great. No tourist markup, no tourist crowds, just a genuinely local bar and club scene that runs on its own terms.

Why Tilburg for Students?

Tilburg offers something rare in the Netherlands: a student city without the tourist premium. Drinks cost less than in Amsterdam or Rotterdam. Most clubs have no entry fee on student nights. The city center is compact enough to walk everywhere. The nightlife runs on a proper student schedule, which means Thursday nights are as big as Saturdays.

Thursday Night Culture

Thursday is THE night in Tilburg. Almost every bar and club runs student specials on Thursday: discounted drinks, free entry before a certain hour, promotional deals. Le Clochard has legendary €1 beer nights on Thursdays that draw enormous crowds. Café de Beurs and other Korte Heuvel bars follow the same pattern. If you're visiting Tilburg during term time, Thursday is the non-negotiable night to go out.

Key Areas for Nightlife

  • Korte Heuvel: the main student nightlife street. Bars and clubs lined up side by side, cheap drinks, social atmosphere. The place to start any Thursday or Saturday night.
  • Piusplein: the bigger square with clubs that run later. Demo/Club Smederij is here, plus Extase and other venues for when you want to actually dance.
  • Stadhuisstraat: bars and terraces, slightly more relaxed atmosphere than Korte Heuvel. Good for earlier evening drinks.

Best Venues for Students

  • Demo / Club Smederij: brand new club that opened September 2025 in collaboration with ESN Tilburg. Small capacity, quality booking, underground vibe. The most interesting new venue in the city.
  • Extase: the main commercial/mainstream club in Tilburg. Bigger space, popular with students for a proper dance night.
  • Club Rodenburg: established student club with regular themed nights. Reliable and affordable.
  • Café de Fuik: classic Tilburg student bar, relaxed atmosphere, cheap drinks.
  • De Kroon: rooftop bar that comes alive in summer. Pre-drinks or late drinks with a view.

ESN Tilburg: International Students Welcome

The Erasmus Student Network (ESN) Tilburg organizes the Carpe Noctem bar at Tilburg University campus. It's specifically designed for international students: cheap drinks, a social atmosphere, and an easy way to meet people. ESN also co-runs Demo/Club Smederij, making it one of the most student-friendly electronic clubs in the Netherlands.

Insider Tip

The Gangmakers app is essential for Tilburg. Bars compete in real-time to offer free shots and deals to get you through their door. Whoever is winning the app gets the most foot traffic. Download it before you go out and check it when deciding where to go next. It's free and it actually works.

Pre-Drinks Culture

Tilburg has a strong pre-drinks culture. The Albert Heijn supermarket on Korte Heuvel is the obvious starting point. Student houses typically do pre-drinks before heading out. Piusplein has outdoor terraces that fill up in spring and summer, and they're particularly popular on warm Thursday evenings.

Getting to Tilburg

From Amsterdam Centraal: NS Intercity to Tilburg Centraal, approximately 1 hour 15 minutes. From Utrecht: approximately 45 minutes. From Eindhoven: approximately 20 minutes. Tilburg Centraal is a 15-minute walk to Korte Heuvel.

  1. Download the Gangmakers app before you arrive.
  2. Thursday is the big student night. Plan around that.
  3. Most places have no entry fee, but bring some cash for older venues.
  4. The city center is walkable. No taxis needed between venues.
  5. Take the NS Intercity from Amsterdam (1h15). The last train back is around midnight, so plan to stay over or book a return in advance.
