Santos Populares is Lisbon's most beloved festival: an entire month of June given over to street parties, sardines, and neighborhood celebrations. While the rest of Europe celebrates summer in parks and festivals, Lisbon does it differently. The party comes to the streets, sardines are grilled on every corner, and the neighborhoods of the old city compete to out-decorate and out-celebrate each other.

What Is Santos Populares?

Santos Populares is the collective celebration of three Catholic popular saints: Santo António (June 12–13), São João (June 23–24), and São Pedro (June 28–29). In Lisbon, Santo António is by far the main event. António of Padua was born in Lisbon in 1195 and is the city's patron saint. June 12 is his feast day, and the night before (running into the early hours of the 13th) is when the city truly erupts.

The Arraiais: Street Parties Throughout June

Each neighborhood of Lisbon organizes its own arraial: an outdoor street party with grilled sardines, bifanas (pork sandwiches), beer, folk music, and dancing. These run nightly from June 1 through June 13 and are free to enter. Tables are set up in the streets and squares, smoke from the sardine grills drifts through the air, and the city transforms into a huge outdoor restaurant and dance floor.

  • Alfama: the most atmospheric arraiais in Lisbon. The hillside streets of the old Moorish quarter become a labyrinthine party. Traditional music, festoons of paper decorations, and the best views of the river.
  • Mouraria: less touristy than Alfama, more authentic. The historic Moorish neighborhood at the foot of the castle has excellent food and a more local crowd. Highly recommended.
  • Intendente: more alternative, mixed and younger crowd. The square at the center fills with tables and the energy is more diverse.
  • Bairro Alto: bars put tables outside, a more upscale version of the arraial experience. Better cocktails, slightly less traditional.

Santo António Night: June 12 (The Main Event)

The night of June 12 is the biggest night of the year in Lisbon. The Marchas Populares is a spectacular parade of neighborhood groups dressed in elaborate traditional costumes, performing choreographed marches and dances along Avenida da Liberdade from around 9pm. Each neighborhood competes and the rivalry is fierce and joyful. After the parade, the party moves to the streets and runs until dawn.

São João (June 23) and São Pedro (June 28)

São João (June 23–24) is more associated with Porto, where it's the biggest celebration of the year, but Lisbon also celebrates, particularly in the Alfama neighborhood. São Pedro (June 28–29) is celebrated in some neighborhoods but is less prominent in Lisbon. If you're visiting in late June, check what's happening in Alfama around the 23rd.

Rock in Rio Lisboa (June 20–28, 2026)

Rock in Rio Lisboa runs concurrently with Santos Populares in late June. The festival takes place at Parque da Bela Vista and typically features major international headliners across multiple stages. It's one of the largest music festivals in Europe by attendance. If you're in Lisbon for Santos Populares in late June, you can combine the street parties with the festival. Book tickets far in advance.

What to Eat and Drink

  • Sardinhas assadas (grilled sardines): mandatory. These are street-grilled on charcoal and eaten with bread and peppers. The smell of sardines cooking is the smell of Santos Populares.
  • Bifanas: pork sandwiches in a spiced sauce, available from street vendors. The Lisbon version is juicy and excellent.
  • Super Bock: the local beer of Lisbon (Sagres is also common). Cans and glasses served everywhere.
  • Ginjinha: cherry liqueur shot served in a tiny chocolate cup or a glass. A Lisbon specialty found all year but consumed in abundance during Santos Populares.
  • Caldo verde: a kale and potato soup, sometimes served at the arraiais. Traditional and warming for the cooler June evenings.

Insider Tip

The arraial in Mouraria on Santo António night (June 12) is the most authentic experience. It's less touristy than Alfama, the food is better, and people actually dance in the street. Get there by 9pm to claim a table before the crowds arrive. The smell of sardines, the sound of folk music, families dancing in cobblestone streets: that's the real Lisbon. Don't leave until at least midnight.

  1. Book accommodation months ahead for Santo António week. The city is packed and prices spike dramatically.
  2. Arrive early at arraiais (by 9pm). By midnight they are completely packed and getting a table becomes impossible.
  3. Carry cash for street vendors and smaller bars. Cards are not always accepted at temporary street stalls.
  4. Wear comfortable shoes. You will be walking on cobblestones for hours.
  5. Expect noise until at least 3–4am. This is not a quiet week in Lisbon.
  6. The Marchas Populares parade on June 12 starts around 9pm along Avenida da Liberdade. Get there by 8pm for a good spot.

Santos Populares is the best time of year to be in Lisbon. The city is at its most alive, its most local, and its most generous. Even the tourists who arrive for it end up feeling like part of the celebration rather than observers of it.
