Formentera is the quietest of the Balearic Islands and, by some measures, the most beautiful. Beach clubs, turquoise water, no traffic, no superclubs. The nightlife here is a long lunch at a chiringuito, a sunset bar, a late outdoor dinner with music. In 2026 it remains the favourite day-trip escape from Ibiza and, for those who stay longer, the most civilised week on the archipelago.
The Ferry from Ibiza
Most visitors come as a day trip from Ibiza. The ferry port is Ibiza Town (La Savina is the Formentera port). Three operators compete: Balearia, Trasmapi, Aquabus. Ferries run every 30 minutes from 7am to 8pm, last returning around 9pm. Crossing 30 minutes. Return ticket 25 to 40 euros. Morning boats are packed in peak season, go before 9am or after noon.
The Best Beach Clubs
- Juan y Andrea (Playa Illetes): the most famous beach club in Formentera. Owned by a local family, unchanged for decades. Paella, fresh fish, prices for the view (a lunch easily hits 150 euros per person). Reserve 3 weeks out.
- Beso Beach (Cavall d’en Borràs): newer, trendier, live DJ after lunch transitions into sunset party. Cocktails 18 to 24 euros.
- Pineta Club del Mar (Playa Migjorn): south coast location, relaxed-chic, Mediterranean kitchen and DJ programming. Sunset visible from the terrace.
- Kiosko 62 (Playa Migjorn): the beach-shack-level original. Much cheaper, rougher, local crowd. Worth the trip for authenticity.
- Gecko Beach Club (Playa Migjorn): boutique-hotel beach club, refined pool-and-beach hybrid.
- Flipper & Chiller (Playa Migjorn): rebuilt several times, still a party-chiringuito standard for evening DJ sets.
The Sunset Bars
Formentera's sunsets face west, so the west coast is where you end the day. Cap de Barbaria lighthouse area is the most dramatic view (but no venue, just a drive and a spot). For a drink with sunset, Piratabus at Migjorn's west end, Es Cap, and the terrace of Gecko Beach Club all line up. Arrive 45 minutes before sunset, order a glass of rosé, don't leave until the sky goes full navy.
Day-to-Night Rhythm
- 12pm: arrive, rent a scooter (20 to 30 euros a day) or taxi to a beach.
- 1pm to 4pm: beach and lunch at a chiringuito. Juan y Andrea for the full experience, Kiosko 62 for budget.
- 4pm to 7pm: beach again or a drive to Ses Salines d’Illes de Ponent for another swim.
- 7pm to 9pm: sunset drinks, west-coast terrace.
- 9pm to 11pm: dinner at Can Carlos, Es Cap or a beach restaurant, outdoors.
- 11pm onwards: optional: Tipic club (the only small club on the island, varying programming) or back to hotel.
Scooter Reality
Formentera is 19 kilometres long. A scooter is the most flexible and cheapest way to move around. Rent from La Savina on arrival (reserve online in July and August). Speeds are low, roads are narrow, and the island shuts down traffic lights at night. Drive sober.
Where to Stay
- Gecko Beach Hotel: boutique, right on Migjorn, 300 to 600 euros per night summer.
- Es Marès: small central hotel in Sant Francesc, more affordable.
- La Mola area: rural, quiet, scooter required.
- Day trip only: widely chosen option. Ibiza hotel and Formentera ferry 2 or 3 times.
What Formentera Isn't
Formentera is not a clubbing island. There is one small club (Tipic) and a handful of late bars, and they're not why people come. If you want DJs into the night, stay in Ibiza. Formentera's party format is beach-club daytime to sunset dinner, maximum 11pm wind-down. Respect that or you'll be disappointed.
Season and Pricing
- Open season: May to October. July and August are peak and prices reflect.
- Beach club lunch: 60 to 150 euros per person at full-service venues.
- Sunset cocktails: 15 to 22 euros each.
- Scooter: 20 to 30 euros a day.
- Ferry: 25 to 40 euros round-trip.
- Hotel: 150 to 600 euros per night in summer, very limited in shoulder.
Formentera works as a counterweight to Ibiza: quieter, slower, more civilised, more expensive per lunch but cheaper per day overall. In 2026 it remains the island for travellers who are in the Balearic mood but not the Balearic pace.
