The Balearic Islands are the single most important nightlife archipelago in Europe. Four islands, each with a distinct personality: Ibiza for superclubs, Mallorca for beach clubs and city nightlife, Formentera for sunsets and chiringuitos, Menorca for caves and calm. In 2026 the season runs from late April to early October, peaking in July and August. This is the guide to picking the right island for the right kind of night.
Which Island for Which Night
- Ibiza: electronic music, superclubs, international DJ residencies, high prices, famous names. If you care about lineups, go here.
- Mallorca: year-round scene, Palma bar culture, Magaluf tourist party, local clubs in Santa Catalina and Paseo Marítimo. Broader range, lower cost than Ibiza.
- Formentera: no real clubs, beach clubs and sunset bars, chill crowd, day-to-night rhythm. The island for people tired of Ibiza.
- Menorca: lowest-key nightlife, cave bars like Cova d’en Xoroi, small venues, families and couples more than party groups.
Ibiza: The Clubbing Capital
Ibiza is the clubbing capital of the world. Six major superclubs (Pacha, Hï Ibiza, Ushuaïa, Amnesia, DC10, Club Chinois, plus rotating newer entries) program 5 to 7 nights a week from May to October. Residencies are the key concept: specific parties run weekly at the same club all season (Cocoon Mondays at Amnesia, Solomun+1 at Pacha, Circoloco at DC10). Prices are high (entry 40 to 80 euros, drinks 15 to 25). We have separate guides on opening parties, closing parties, superclubs and boat parties.
Mallorca: Year-Round Scene
Mallorca has the most diverse Balearic nightlife. Palma runs year-round with the Paseo Marítimo clubs (Titos, Pachá Mallorca, Varadero), the Santa Catalina cocktail bar scene and the old town tapas routes. Magaluf is the tourist mass-market zone with BCM Square and a young British crowd. Port d’Andratx and Portals Nous offer high-end yacht-crowd venues. Full depth in our dedicated Mallorca guide.
Formentera: Sunset and Beach
Formentera has no superclubs. What it has are some of the most atmospheric beach clubs in the Mediterranean: Beso Beach, Pineta, Juan y Andrea, Kiosko 62. The rhythm runs from midday lunch through a long sunset to a late open-air dinner with music. It's 30 minutes by ferry from Ibiza and a very different energy. For day-to-night party travellers burnt out on Ibiza's pace, this is the reset.
Menorca: Calm with a Cave
Menorca is the quietest Balearic. The defining venue is Cova d’en Xoroi on the south coast: a bar and club built into sea cliffs and caves, with sunset DJ sets that transition into night parties. Beyond that, Ciutadella and Mahón each have a handful of bars and clubs that run Thursday to Saturday in summer. The island is more family-and-couples than hedonistic clubbing, but the atmosphere makes it worth a stop.
Season Calendar 2026
- April: pre-season. A few Ibiza venues soft-open, Mallorca year-round clubs are quiet, Formentera and Menorca still closed for most venues.
- May: opening parties week in Ibiza (late April to mid May). All major superclubs launch their residencies. Mallorca summer season starts.
- June: full season on. All four islands at capacity. Weather ideal.
- July to August: peak. Book everything 2 to 4 weeks ahead. Prices peak. Ibiza hotels around 400 to 600 euros per night for decent mid-range.
- September: shoulder season. Still full programming, slightly cooler weather, lower prices, easier to book. Many locals' favourite month.
- October: closing parties in Ibiza, last two weeks of the season. Emotional goodbye events, famous DJs make farewell appearances. Formentera and Menorca wind down.
Cost Reality Check
Ibiza in peak season is expensive. Budget 500 to 800 euros per person per day if you're doing superclubs, beach clubs and staying in good accommodation. For Mallorca, halve that. For Formentera and Menorca, halve again. If budget matters, consider Mallorca as a base and day-trip to Ibiza for one superclub night.
Getting Between Islands
- Ibiza to Formentera: 30 min ferry, multiple operators (Balearia, Trasmapi, Aquabus), 25 to 40 euros return.
- Ibiza to Mallorca: 1.5 to 3.5 hours by ferry, or 30 min flight. Daily service.
- Mallorca to Menorca: 1.5 hour ferry or 30 min flight.
- Flights between islands: cheap on Vueling and Ryanair in shoulder season, 40 to 80 euros.
- Private boat charters: widely available, 500 to 3000 euros per day depending on size.
Practical Tips Across the Islands
- Book flights and accommodation by February for peak July and August.
- Superclub tickets: always cheaper online in advance. Door prices can be 50% higher.
- Cards are accepted everywhere, but keep 50 euros cash for taxis and smaller beach venues.
- Taxi apps: Cabify and FreeNow work on most islands. Taxi cash scams exist, take the meter option.
- Water: tap water on Ibiza is not always drinkable. Use bottled. Mallorca and Menorca are fine.
- Sunscreen: obvious but overlooked. A day starting at noon and ending at 6am on an Ibiza beach club without sunscreen is a bad memory.
The Balearic Islands are not one destination, they're four. Understanding which island fits which kind of trip saves you the classic mistake of doing Ibiza for an entire week when a Formentera day or a Mallorca base would have suited you better. Pick deliberately, and the islands reward you all season.
